UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS AND PHILLY GREEN MAP
IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE GREEN MAP SYSTEM
TO RAISE AWARENESS OF LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

October 25, 2004 - Philadelphia, PA. Philly Green Map, as part of the Green Map System, is teaming up with the University of the Arts to research and map Philadelphia's environmental and cultural triumphs, challenges, and potential successes. A collaborative effort between the Multimedia and Industrial Design departments is taking steps toward collecting location data from Philadelphia's Center & South City neighborhoods, creating a map for locals, tourists, and environmentalists alike to utilize and share. Our Green Map Team is working to spread awareness on environmental issues and to help get the community involved in shaping its own future.

The Green Map System is a nonprofit organization. All of our research and production is conducted by concerned citizens and students. We are currently seeking sponsorship of local, regional, and eco-conscious businesses and individuals to help cover printing costs of the map, as well as advertising of our Map Release Event. We are also asking that the local media to donate publicity opportunities. A celebration for the release of our map as well as the launch of our interactive website, PhillyGreenMap.org, is set for early December.

Philadelphia, by its founders and subsequent planners, was designed to be a "green city." Over the years, however, it remains one of the highest cities for pollutants and many of Philadelphia's neighborhoods are witnessing the decay of their 'green' spaces. Our city has a mandated recycling program that few citizens participate in and even fewer officials enforce. Philadelphia is a remarkable city that boasts some of the most historic sites in the country, including the largest landscaped park in a U.S. city. It is diverse with businesses, artists, and students, and more, yet it is overrunning with blight and toxins. Philadelphia has long been seen as a progressive city with rich history and beauty. Isn't it logical that we utilize its natural resources to preserve that history and beauty for future generations? Philly Green Map's continued goal is to raise awareness on environmental gains and follies, as wall as to educate and motivate the public to take action and share responsibility.
