Executive Summary
"Non-Process" is an exploration of image making. The combination of basic inkjet technologies with basic Non-Silver processes developed into a new method of print making. Through utilizing the crucial portions of the Non-Silver process and introducing them into the physical and constrained nature of an inkjet printer; a new technique for creating light-sensitive images occurs. The new found process documented develops into a new set of standards defining the new process.
Creative Brief
Understanding the interface of an Inkjet printer requires one to understand the qualities of the ink cartridge used. The HP Inkjet 400 series and 600 series printers share similar cartridges. The cartridges contain a liquid ink slightly thicker than the consistency of water. Removing the contents of the ink cartridge, with this in mind, dictates the types of alternative fluids that can be reinserted into the cartridge. The project suggests integrating Non-Silver chemical solutions with the Inkjet Cartridge. This will afford manipulation of typical constraints essentially yielding new methods of print-making through both mediums. The challenge is in translating a classical print making method through a data driven machine. By eliminating the use of a negative and replacing it with an electronic applicator, certain fundamentals of the classical process are denied. Photography is no longer a necessary component in the process of creating a light-resist or negative. Digital data has entirely different and characteristically unfounded limitations that can be taken as far as the output device allows. The experiment has the potential to consist of automated data acquisition, surveillance data, translations, conversions, or interpretations of other media capable of being expressed digitally. In a more conventional sense, the experiment can also take the form of intentional and crafted compositions following along traditional processes except without the negative.
Conceptual Underpinnings
The main themes of the project are the following:
- Re-contextualization of a classic medium and process
- Re-contextualization of a contemporary medium and process
- Printmaking method
All of the non-silver techniques applied in the project are derived directly from Sarah Van Keuren's "A Non-Silver Manual" which contains information on the processes. The manual covers chemical compounds, preparatory and working methods, good habits, exposure procedures and brief connections to other sources, printed or actual accounts.
Inkjet printers are a technology built on the same foundations as something as rudimentary as the printing press. Where this technology and the Inkjet interface find significance is in how ubiquitous it has become to own and operate the technology. What once was a cherished technology in Johannes Gutenberg's printing press has now changed into this disposable, almost single-serving pseudo-technology.
